Deciding to build your own canvas projects is a great idea, as long as your not planning on using your Mom's sewing machine! I quickly realized that a typical home or quiltwork machine was not made to sew the thick materials and multiple layers that are required to build the heavy marine grade canvas products that I was planning. This might have been a showstopper but, due to my long term goal of planning to live on my own sailboat someday, I decided I had enough projects to justify buying a high quality industrial walking foot sewing machine. Equiped with this key piece of equipment I was up and sewing!
Combining this new sewing machine with my background and education as a Mechanical Engineer I quickly found the world of canvas construction and sewing to be a natural fit to my background and love of all things mechanical. I'm not sure if you'll believe me but I find working with canvas to be very similar to bending sheetmetal, how? it's really all about your own ability to visualize a 2 dimensional piece of material and the steps required to make it into a 3 dimensional product! It also helps my day job involves 3 dimensional computer aided design...
Since not everyone has the need or desire to buy their own sewing machine, I have decided to offer my design and services to the Mutineer and Bucanneer community, for starter's that is, I will be expanding my product line and services to all sailing enthusiast's interested in high quality sailing product.
